Accommodation
While studying in Alberta, international students are required to have a legal custodian within the province. In cases where a parent has not joined the student in Alberta, a friend, relative, host family or dormitory supervisor can serve as the temporary legal custodian of the international student.
While studying Alberta, students may live:
With friends or relatives
International students may stay with family friends or relatives while they study in Alberta. These arrangements are made privately by the student or their family.
With an Alberta family (home stay)
Home stay families provide international students with a private room and 3 meals a day. They are a home away from home for the student and communicate regularly with the student’s parents and teachers.
Home stays are usually arranged through the local school district. Most school districts have a home stay coordinator to help find a responsible, enthusiastic and qualified home stay family. Home stay families are carefully selected and their homes are inspected to ensure a good fit for the student.
Fees for arranging home stay placements range from $200 - $800 Canadian dollars. Monthly costs for a home stay range from $400 - $800 Canadian dollars per month.
In a dormitory
A few Alberta schools are equipped with dormitory facilities where international students may live while they study. Students in dormitories are usually cared for by a resident supervisor. To determine whether or not dormitory accommodation is available, please contact the local school district.
